“…Whereas first lightning climatologies were deduced from SYNOP records (e.g., Wakonigg, 1978;Cehak, 1980;Pelz, 1984;Cacciamani et al, 1995), the recently developed electromagnetic sensor networks allow for spatially homogeneous analyses, such as the early study performed by Finke and Hauf (1996) with respect to southern Germany. Several papers focusing on different European regions found various distinct regional and local structures of lightning probability or density (e.g., Schulz et al, 2005;Coquillat et al, 2013;Wapler, 2013;Czernecki et al, 2016).
