Relationship between Inflammatory Markers and New Cardiovascular Events in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction Who Underwent Primary Angioplasty

Abstract: Introduction:The determination of inflammation markers in circulation has enabled an important improvement in the study of cardiovascular diseases. It was tested the hypothesis that non-specific markers such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen may provide prognostic information in patients with acute myocardial infarction with persistent ST-segment elevation (STEMI) undergoing primary angioplasty (PCI).Methods:Patients: A cohort of 197 consecutive patients with STEM… Show more

“…44 CRP can represent a marker for a pro-inflammatory state, as it affects cardiovascular risk. [45][46][47] Although women appear to have higher CRP levels than men, both rise progressively with increasing waist circumference. Other factors besides body fat must be in play to explain the higher CRP levels in women.…”

“…163166 This correlation may be useful for early diagnosis of IHD because multiple biomarkers can be used to detect inflammation including high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α). In fact, some of these biomarkers have been used to aid in the diagnosis of IHD.…”

“…In fact, some of these biomarkers have been used to aid in the diagnosis of IHD. 164,166,167 However, some of the biomarkers are not specific for IHD, which may limit their diagnostic usefulness. Also, the exact mechanism of how biomarkers function is not clear.…”

“…Further independent risk factors for having pro-oxidant HDL could be identified. i) History of prior AMI, considering the pivotal role of inflammation in the development of dysfunctional AMI (26) and the persistent inflammatory state after AMI (38), it is not surprising that patients with prior AMI are more prone to develop dysfunctional HDL. This observation might at least partially explain why survivors of AMI remained at a significantly higher cardiovascular risk compared to the general population (39).…”
