Relationship between nurses’ moral sensitivity and the quality of care

Abstract: Considering the significant inverse relationship between the score of patient quality care and the dimension of moral conflict experience, it seems when nurses make moral decisions, they experience a conflict between personal and professional values in their careers and thus experience moral tension. If this tension is not resolved properly, it can provide a way for them to distance themselves from patients, thereby making nurses indifferent to moral care.

“…The importance of ethics in care is to such an extent that it sometimes outweighs the technical aspects of nursing (8); in this regard any care should be provided ethically to have the highest quality. As nurses become more sensitive to the ethical aspects of care, the quality of care provided also tends to increase (9,10). Because the level of sensitivity to ethical issues and understanding the ethical dimensions of care are influenced by cultural and workplace conditions, and beliefs of nurses, the level of moral sensitivity of nurses can vary (11).…”

“…At first glance, nurses' performance and clinical activity may seem to be separate from ethics. However, ethics and clinical performance are not practically separable [22]; rather, the observation of codes of ethics is related to nursing performance in care-giving [23]. On the other hand, promotion of nurses' awareness of ethical principles and issues can lead to improved patient safety and quality care [24].…”
