Relationship between Prostate Specific Antigen, Prostate Volume and Age in the Benign Prostate

Abstract: The relationship between prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels, prostate volume and age was examined in 472 men who underwent PSA assay (Hybritech), digital rectal examination (DRE) and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) as part of a community survey of benign prostatic hyperplasia following exclusion of men with prostate cancer. The mean age of the study population was 60 years (range 40-79). The mean PSA was 2.4 ng/ml and 85% of the men had levels < 4 ng/ml. There was a modest correlation between PSA and both ag… Show more

“…Similarly, although PSA values rise as part of the natural history in benign as well as malignant prostatic disease, this has only been reported in patients with the prostate in-situ. For example, patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia typically have a PSA rise of 0.2 ng ml -1 year -1 (Collins et al, 1993). It is not necessarily the case that residual benign prostatic tissue after RRP will have the similar PSA kinetics.…”
