“…The extant research literature on the health and mental health outcomes of bullying involvement has focused primarily on victimization but much less often on perpetration. In general, the perpetration of bullying is significantly linked to problematic behaviors, such as alcohol and illicit drug use, tobacco and marijuana smoking, selling illegal drugs, gambling, driving while intoxicated, shoplifting, vandalism, and carrying a weapon (Arcadepani, Eskenazi, Fidalgo, & Hong, 2019; Lebrun‐Harris, Sherman, Limber, Miller, & Edgerton, 2019; Sharp, Young, & Moore, 2019). The association between bullying perpetration and internalizing problems remains understudied, and among the existing studies, findings have been largely inconsistent.…”

“…Early initiation of substance use often leads to addiction in adulthood (Phillips et al, 2021; US Department of Health and Human Services, 2016) and is associated with other negative physical and mental health outcomes such as cancer, cardiac disorder, visual impairment, depression, and anxiety (Carrano, 2012; Hussain et al, 2023; US Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). Adolescent substance use has also been found to be associated with risky behaviours including violent or delinquent acts (Hoeben et al, 2021; Walters, 2022), riding with a driver under the influence of alcohol (Sharp et al, 2019), drunk driving (Ewing et al, 2015), weapon carrying (Baiden et al, 2021; Laufer et al, 2006), and unsafe sex (Quinn et al, 2023; Voisin et al, 2013). Therefore, it is particularly important to understand adolescent substance use, as the median age of onset for drug use has been found to be around age 15 years (Holmstedt et al, 2020; Swendsen et al, 2012).…”

“…Alcohol and drugs particularly impair behavioral control and incite destructive actions, contributing to a significant proportion of adolecents conflict with the law (Dória et al 2015). A secondary analysis of data from Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey in 2014 revealed that certain unlawful and precarious behaviors are linked to the use of alcohol and marijuana (Sharp et al 2019). Similarly, the 2016 National Population Census in Peruvian Juvenile Detention Centers indicated that over a half of juvenile delinquents in Peru reported substance abuse, with cannabis being the most abused substance (Vargas-Fernández et al 2019).…”
