“…At that time, the treatments proposed for superovulation in cervids used progesterone devices for 11–14 days, associated with eCG or FSH applications or a combination of both toward the end of the treatment [ M. gouazoubira —Duarte and Garcia, ; O. virginianus— Waldhalm et al, ; C. elaphus —Argo et al, ; Asher et al, ; Bainbridge et al, ; Fennessy et al, ; Soler et al, ; D. dama —Asher et al, ; Fenessy et al, ; Morrow et al, ; Elaphurus davidianus —Argo et al, ]. Thus, the status of ovarian follicle development at the time of synchronization treatments was not taken into account in previous studies [McCorkell et al, ].…”

“…The procedure involved with holding hinds from food and water for 24 hr and physical restraint, followed by anesthesia, as previously described for M. gouazoubira [Zanetti et al, ]. The laparoscopic procedures used were the same as described for red deer [Asher et al, ] and sheep [Godfrey et al, ]. The incisions were closed with 2–0 nylon suture and the hinds were treated with benzathine penicillin (Pentabiotic; Fort Dodge, Campinas, Brazil, 40,000 IU/Kg i.m.)…”

“…In dairy cattle, ovulation occurs approximately 12–16 hours after the end of standing oestrus [18-20], and in captive red deer ( Cervus elaphus ) it is reported to occur up to 40 hours after the end of standing oestrus [21]. When examining reproductive organs during the period from ovulation to detectable pregnancy, it is not possible to macroscopically evaluate if mating has taken place or not.…”
