Relationship of diet to the fatty acid composition of human adipose tissue structural and stored lipids

Abstract: The habitual intake of 20 healthy free-living subjects was determined by two 7-day food records. Documented fatty acid intakes were utilized to examine the influence of fatty acid intake on fatty acid composition of stored and structural lipids in subcutaneous adipose tissue. Subjects with higher intakes of saturated fatty acids exhibited increased levels of total saturated fatty acids and decreased polyunsaturated fatty acids in adipose tissue triglycerides (p less than 0.01). The dietary P/S ratio was signif… Show more

“…For example, the calf adipose depot contains more palmitoleic acid (6%) than the trapezius (3%), perirenal (4%), and mesenteric (4%) depots (49). Also, palmitoleate in subcutaneous adipose tissue in the upper arm and thigh is more abundant than in abdominal subcutaneous fat (50)(51)(52)(53)(54)(55). Interestingly, the content of palmitoleic acid in adipose tissue decreases with age.…”

“…The importance of dietary fat composition as a determinant of serum and adipose tissue FA composition has been investigated [6,7]. Quantity of dietary fat has recently been considered with regard to the composition of circulating FAs [3][4][5], particularly saturated FAs.…”

“…Differences in adipose tissue composition reported between racial groups, infant vs. adult and gender rapidly disappear when a diet of similar fatty acid composition is consumed (Damsgaard et al, 2013;Field et al, 1985). This section describes the lipid composition of fat cells categorized as structural lipids (i.e.…”
