Relationship of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans Serotype b to Aggressive Periodontitis: Frequency in Pure Cultured Isolates

Abstract: The results of this study show that proportions of serotype b of A. actinomycetemcomitans are significantly greater in culture-positive patients with aggressive periodontitis than those with chronic periodontitis.

“…30,61,62,65 The subgingival presence and pathogenic relevance of specific bacteria and strains such as A. actinomycetemcomitans JP2 clone is probably modulated by age but is under a strong host genetic influence, as testified by the prevalence of this clone in people of specific ethnicity, not necessarily dependent on their geographic origin. 79,80 The JP2 has shown strong evidence of association with disease initiation and progression. 20,23 This association seems more evident than previously-reported associations between bacteria such as P. gingivalis and T. denticola and progression of chronic periodontitis.…”

“…The host response to A. actinomycetemcomitans is the strongest against serotype b strains when the responses against serotype a, b, and c strains in the United States are compared (16). It has long been known that of the 6 serotypes of A. actinomycetemcomitans, serotype b also increases the risk of development of periodontal disease (17,18). Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans possesses several virulence factors, including leukotoxin, cytolethal distending toxin (CDT), and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which have potent immunomodulatory effects.…”

“…Serotype b remains one of the common serotypes found in the human oral cavity (9,13,51). The serotype b O-PS of A. actinomycetemcomitans is encoded by an operon composed of 21 genes, which are responsible for the biosynthesis of the repeating trisaccharide unit of this particular serotype (53,55).…”
