This study first employed a combined pretreatment of low‐dose peroxy‐disulfate (PDS) and initial pH 10 to promote short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production via acidogenic fermentation using different types of sewage sludge as substrates. The experimental results showed that the yield of maximal SCFAs and acetate proportion after the combined pretreatment were 1513.82 ± 28.25 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L and 53.64%, and promoted by 1.28 and 1.56 times higher, respectively, compared to the sole initial pH 10 pretreatment. Furthermore, in terms of the disintegration degree of sewage sludge, it increased by more than 18% with the combined pretreatment compared to the pretreatment of sole initial pH 10. Waste‐activated sludge (WAS) from A2/O and Bardenpho processes were more biodegradable, explained by the 1.47‐ and 1.35‐times higher disintegration rate than those from oxidation ditch and they favored acetate dominant fermentation. Correlation analysis revealed a strong correlation (p ≤ 0.01) between SCFAs production and soluble COD, total proteins, proteins in soluble‐extracellular polymeric substances (SEPS), total polysaccharides, and polysaccharides in SEPS. Mechanism explorations showed that preoxidation with PDS enhanced the solubilization and biodegradability of complex substrates, and altered the microbial community structure during the fermentation process. Firmicutes and Tetrasphaera were proven to play a key role in improving SCFA production, especially in promoting acetate production by converting additional SCFAs into acetate. Additionally, the addition of PDS greatly promoted sulfur and iron‐related metabolic activities. Finally, the combined pretreatment was estimated to be a cost‐effective solution for reutilizing and treating Fe‐sludge.

In recent years, ceramic membranes have been increasingly used in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). However, membrane fouling was still the core issue restricting the large‐scale engineering application of ceramic MBRs. As a novel and alternative technology, ultrasonic could be used to control membrane fouling. This research focused on the efficiency and mechanism of ultrasonic controlling membrane fouling in ceramic MBRs. The results showed that ultrasonic reduced the sludge concentration in MBR, and the average particle size of sludge was always in a high range. The sludge activity of the system was stable at 6–9 (mg O2·(g MLSS·h)−1), indicating that ultrasonic did not destroy the activity of microorganisms in the system. The extracellular polymer substance (EPS) of the ultrasonic group was slightly higher than that of the control group, while the soluble microbial product (SMP) content was relatively stable. The ceramic membrane of the ultrasonic group has a partial retention effect on the organic components. The application of ultrasonic slowed down the decrease of the hydrophilicity of the ceramic membrane. The main pollutants on the membrane surface exist in the form of aromatic and heteroaromatic rings, alkynes, and so forth. Ultrasonic removes the amide substances from the membrane surface. Membrane fouling resistance is mainly due to membrane pore blockage, accounting for 75.53%.Practitioner Points Enrich the research on the mechanism of ultrasonic technology in membrane fouling control. The MBR can still operate normally with ultrasonic applied. The time for the ceramic membrane to reach the fouling end point is 2.4 times that without ultrasonic. The main cause of membrane fouling was pore blocking, accounting for 75.53%.

Effect of Carbon Source on Endogenous Partial Denitrification Process: Characteristics of Intracellular Carbon Transformation and Nitrite Accumulation

This study focused on the start-up and operating characteristics of the endogenous partial denitrification (EPD) process with different carbon sources. Two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) with sodium acetate (SBR1#) and glucose (SBR2#) as carbon sources were operated under anaerobic/oxic (A/O) and anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A/A/O) modes successively for 240 d. The results showed that COD removal efficiency reached 85% and effluent COD concentrations were below 35 mg/L in both SBRs. The difference was that faster absorption and transformation of sodium acetate was achieved compared to glucose (COD removal rate (CRR) was 7.54 > 2.22 mgCOD/(L·min) in SBR1# compared to SBR2#). EPD could be started up with sodium acetate and glucose as carbon sources, respectively, and desirable high nitrite accumulations were both obtained at influent NO3−−N (NO3−-Ninf) increased from 20 to 40 mg/L with nitrate-to-nitrite transformation ratio (NTR) and specific NO3−-N deduction rate (rNa) of 88.4~90% and 2.41~2.38 mgN/(gVSS·h), respectively. However, at NO3−-N of 50~60 mg/L, both the NTR and rNa in SBR1# were higher compared to SBR2# (86.5% > 83.9% and 1.58 > 1.20 mgN/(gVSS·h), respectively). Hereafter, when NO3−-N was increased by 70~90 mg/L, lower NTR and rNa were observed in SBR1# than in SBR2# (72% and 78%, 1.16 and 1.32 mgN/(gVSS·h), respectively). Additionally, similar internal carbon transformations were observed to drive EPD for NO2−−N accumulation, especially for higher and faster carbon transformation with sodium acetate as carbon source compared to glucose. However, precise control of anoxic time as the peak point of nitrite (TNi,max) was still the key to achieve high NO2−−N accumulation.
