Relationship of Sleep Duration With All‐Cause Mortality and Cardiovascular Events: A Systematic Review and Dose‐Response Meta‐Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

Abstract: BackgroundEffects of extreme sleep duration on risk of mortality and cardiovascular outcomes remain controversial. We aimed to quantify the dose‐response relationships of sleep duration with risk of all‐cause mortality, total cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and stroke. Methods and ResultsPubMed and Embase were systematically searched for prospective cohort studies published before December 1, 2016, that examined the associations between sleep duration and at least 1 of the 4 outcomes in generall… Show more

“…Total sleep time was significantly shorter for pSS patients with poor sleep quality at 7.1 ± 1.8 hours compared to 7.9 ± 1.2 hours for pSS patients without sleep impairment in this survey. Sleep duration that was either too short or too long was associated with higher risk of all‐cause mortality and cardiovascular events, with the lowest risk for sleep duration of ≈7 hours per day . A need clearly exists for future studies to address these issues, including circadian rhythm, the level of cytokines, medications, and so on.…”

“…4 What is more serious is that individuals with sleep deprivation have irregular sleep schedules, resulting in circadian misalignment, which may aggravate the risk of cardiovascular, coronary heart diseases and other chronic disorders. 5,6 Sleep deprivation may also cause emotional problems, impaired social, work performance, sleepiness and so on 7 Emerging evidence suggests that sleep disturbances promote weight gain through an effect on glucose metabolism and might be a factor in increasing risk for diabetes. 8 Notwithstanding, the quality of sleep is generally neglected by both healthcare professionals, who do not routinely assess it in clinical practice, and patients them- Considering the lack of data, in this study we aimed to determine sleep quality and evaluate its relationship with disease activity, quality of life and mood disorders.…”

“…Nightly sleep durations considerably shorter or longer than 7 hours have been correlated with morbidity and the acceleration of death in a U-shaped pattern. 29 This observation and a large body of work on the preponderance of U-shaped dose-response curves in biology 30 might be construed to assume that long sleep durations cause poor health. However, those who are sick also tend to sleep more, and regularly forcing the infirm awake in an attempt to shorten their sleep durations to seven hours/night might worsen their health status and hasten an early death, as suggested by studies of intensive care unit delirium, the risk of which is reduced by the simple measure of using earplugs.…”
