Relationships between age-related biochemical markers of bone turnover and OPG, TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 in native Chinese women

Abstract: Osteoprotegerin (OPG), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and TGF-β2 are cytokines closely associated with bone metabolism. However, their association with bone turnover markers in native Chinese women remains unknown. The study aims to investigate the relationship between bone metabolism related cytokines including OPG, TGF-β1, TGF-β2 and bone turnover markers in native Chinese women. The cross-sectional study was conducted on 691 healthy Chinese women (20-80 years old). Levels of OPG, TGF-β1, TGF-β2, ser… Show more

“…This review is focused on the diagnostic value of several new serum markers of bone metabolism, including bonespecific alkaline phosphatase (bAP. Some researchers find similar results to ours, their studies have highlighted the correlation between the BAP and the sexual hormones during menopause; they showed that the concentration of BAP is related to the concentration of the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) among menopausal women (13)(14)(15) . A Chinese investigation reported that the concentration of FSH explained 1.9-11.8% of BAP concentration among postmenopausal women (13).…”

“…Results can vary with time of day, season, diet and exercise. Reference intervals for bone turnover markers across ethnic groups have been reported for example in UK and Europe, [147][148][149] China [150][151][152] and Japan. 153,154 In Table 7, representative reference intervals for bone markers pre-and postmenopause are summarized.…”

“…Here, several classical SASP proteins, including TGF-β2, OPG, MMP9, TIMP1, MIF1, PRDXs, and IGFBP3, were found to be upregulated in aged OLCS exosomes. Among them, TGF-β2 and OPG are important mediators of bone metabolism; serum levels of TGF-β2 and OPG have shown significant positive correlations with bone turnover markers in Chinese women [52]. TIMP1, a tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (MMPs), is expressed in both osteocytes and osteoblasts and maintains the balance of bone matrix degradation by regulating MMP levels [53].…”
