“…The second approach used is the clinician rating of Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) (Jones, Thornicroft, Coffey, & Dunn, 1995). Some studies have supported its validity (Kohler, Horsdal, Baandrup, Mors, & Gasse, 2016; Samara et al, 2014; Startup, Jackson, & Bendix, 2002; Suzuki et al, 2015), although others have been less sanguine (Aas, 2011). Here we were able to obtain adequate inter-clinician reliability (ICC> .9) on the GAF ratings in the ADHD cohort (although not tested in the alcohol cohort) and therefore used it as second measure of severity.…”

“…A number of different scales measuring functioning are available (Brissos et al, 2011). We had access to GAF-F, which has been reg- (Samara et al, 2014;Suzuki et al, 2015). GAF-F has been used in clinical practice and research for decades, and is still used in clinical practice in Denmark and other Nordic and European countries (Aas et al, 2016;Awan et al, 2017;Baandrup et al, 2012;Baandrup et al, 2016;Schurhoff et al, 2015;Sharma et al, 2017).…”

“…We had access to GAF‐F, which has been registered for individuals with schizophrenia in Denmark since 2004. Despite of the fact that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM‐V) Task Force decided that GAF was not an adequate instrument and introduced a new tool to assess global functioning and impairment (American Psychiatric Association, ), GAF‐F captures psychological, social and occupational functioning and correlates well with other measures of functioning (Samara et al, ; Suzuki et al, ). GAF‐F has been used in clinical practice and research for decades, and is still used in clinical practice in Denmark and other Nordic and European countries (Aas et al, 2016; Awan et al, 2017; Baandrup et al, ; Baandrup et al, ; Schurhoff et al, ; Sharma et al, ).…”

“…From this perspective, assessment tools measuring the level of functioning and symptoms, like Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) [10], may capture central aspects of what it means to be autonomous. However, social functioning can be difficult to measure [11] and to our knowledge no golden standard of how to evaluate it seems to exist. Compared to social and occupational functioning, clinical factors have been shown to be the primary determinants in order to predict a patient's total GAF score [12].…”
