Relationships between patient‐centered cancer nursing interventions and desired health outcomes in the context of the health care system

Abstract: A non-experimental longitudinal prospective study was conducted to examine the relationships between patient-centered nursing interventions (PCNIs), system characteristics, patient characteristics, and desired health outcomes (DHOs) for 173 hematology-oncology patients. Forty-nine nurse participants provided system characteristics data. Confirmatory factor analyses yielded parsimonious scales to operationalize the variables. In the path model, one PCNI-individualization-was positively related to three subseque… Show more

“…A patient-centered approach is increasingly being considered a paradigm for high-quality interpersonal care. There is still a lack of consistent research evidence linking patient-centered care to improved patient outcomes, 8,[13][14][15][16][17] but it has been demonstrated that a practice style emphasizing patient activation is associated with significantly lower primary care charges. 18 Moreover, there is emerging evidence for an association between patient-centered communication and the utilization of medical resources.…”

“…The specific activities reflective of this component of PCC are: selecting the type, mode of delivery, or dose of treatment that is congruent with patients' needs and preferences; responding to changes in patients' needs by modifying the type, mode of delivery or dose of treatment; addressing patients' concerns and facilitating patients' access to healthcare services and community resources they require successfully to manage their health problem. Individualization of care has been recognized as an element of PCC by Robinson et al [14], Hobbs [8], Radwin et al [12] and Morgan and Yoder [18]. It is the implementation of the 3 components (i.e., holistic, collaborative and responsive care), in combination, that characterizes the patient-centered approach to care.…”

“…The overall purpose of this study was to describe nurse practitioners' self-reported implementation of PCC. Although PCC is considered an essential element of high quality care and several studies and reviews of literature have been conducted to clarify what exactly comprises PCC [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15], there is no agreement on its conceptualization [16]. Differences in the definition of what constitutes PCC lead to variability in its operationalization.…”

“…Studier bekrefter at dette oppleves meget bra av pasientene. Måten å organisere kreftsykepleien på viser seg å bety mye for å ivareta helhet og kontinuitet (17)(18)(19)(20)(21).…”

“…Den personlige dimensjonen ved sykepleien blir synlig og får betydning. Dette vurderes som en positiv kvalitet av pasientene, og underbygges i studier (17,19). Å kjenne hverandre og konteksten man lever i fordrer evnen til å balansere mellom roller og ansvar.…”
