Relative Age Effect in UEFA Championship Soccer Players

Abstract: Relative Age Effect (RAE) is the breakdown by both age grouping and dates of birth of athletes. In the past 20 years the existence of this effect has been shown with higher or smaller impact in multiple sports, including soccer. “…This is in line with Abbott et al (2002) claiming that the complexity of soccer allows weaknesses to be compensated for by strengthening other skills. It has been documented that players born early in the year of selection are both taller and heavier than theirs later born co-players (Carling, Le Gall, Reilly, & Williams, 2009;González-Víllora et al, 2015;Helsen et al, 2005). Results from this study support such discoveries by finding that players born in the first half of the year were significantly taller and heavier than players born in the second half for both U 14 and U 13 players.…”

“…In a previous study the researchers (Gonzalez-Villora, Pastor-Vicedo & Cordente, 2015) mentioned that RAE was not evident in the professional category, but it was in the three lower categories (youth categories). Gutierrez-Diaz, Pastor-Vicedo, Gonzalez-Villora and Contreras-Jordan, (2010) mentioned that RAE is greater when the clubs have more financial resources, as they have a greater opportunity to select players.…”

“…Zjištěné výsledky se neshodují se závěry autorů González-Víllora et al (2015), kde byl prokázán vliv RAE v juniorských kategoriích, ne-byl však statisticky potvrzen v profesionální kategorii. Naše závěry se shodují s výsledky autorů Helsen et al (2012), kteří zjistili, že v rozmezí 10 let (sezóny 2000/1 a 2010/11) je vliv prokázaný a přibližně stejně silný.…”
