Relative excitation of surface waves by earthquakes and underground explosions

Abstract: The surface‐wave magnitude (Ms) is used as the measure of the relative excitation of long‐period waves by underground explosions and earthquakes in five distinct geographical and tectonic regions of the world: the western United States, the Aleutian‐Kamchatka area, southern Algeria (presumed explosions), central Asia, and Novaya Zemlya. The Ms‐versus‐mb data indicate that the underground explosions generated smaller surface waves than earthquakes from the same region of comparable body‐wave magnitudes (mb). Fo… Show more

“…In analyzing m D :M s data, Liebermann and Pomeroy (1969) and Basham (1969) noted that the i»tj :M s data for explosions and earthquakes in the western United States are anomalous with respect to such data for the Aleutians, Algeria, and the USSR. Marshall and Basham (1972) confirmed that the m^Mg relations for explosions in the western US differ from those for explosions in the Aleutians, the USSR, and China, but they did not detect any regional differences in litf^ data for earthquakes.…”
