Relative impact of pre-eclampsia on birth weight in a low resource setting: A prospective cohort study

Abstract: Highlights Pre-eclampsia is the major determinant of birthweight across all gestations in Uganda. Pre-eclampsia accounts for ×10 more birthweight variability than all other factors. In pre-eclampsia, gestation predicts birthweight better than disease severity.

“…Meanwhile, the limitation is that because this is a cross-sectional study, the authors cannot confirm a temporal relationship between exposure and outcome variables. Another limitation is that it did not investigate some of the known risk factors from previous studies for LBW, including dietary and nutritional factors 42,43 , genetic factors, and [44][45][46] , as well as pollution and environmental factors 47,48 . This limitation is more due to limited secondary data from the 2017 IDHS.…”

“…A study in Uganda and cohort study in Sweden also found a correlation between preeclampsia and lower birth weight/height. 26,27 These findings might be due to inadequate maternal perfusion of placental villi, local placental hypoxia, and impaired fetal growth resulted from shallow cytotrophoblast invasion of the uterus in preeclamptic women. 28 An insignificant association between anemia and preeclampsia using the Chi-square test method (p=0.712) is shown in (Table 2).…”
