Relative Motion between St. Croix and the Puerto Rico-Northern Virgin Islands Block Derived from Continuous GPS Observations (1995–2014)

Abstract: St. Croix is located inside the sweep of the Lesser Antilles arc and near the southeastern edge of the Greater Antillean ridge. It is separated from the Puerto Rico and the Northern Virgin Islands (PRNVI) block by the Virgin Islands basin. Recent seismic activities demonstrate that the Virgin Islands basin is tectonically active. A better understanding of fault activities in the basin would improve seismic hazard assessment in this region. This study illustrates out a detailed way of deriving relative motion b… Show more

“…Due to its long history and high-quality data, this site has been frequently used to represent the Caribbean plate in tectonic studies (Yang et al, in press;e. g. Mann, 2002;DeMets et al, 2007;Liu and Wang, 2015). CRO1 has a velocity of 19.17 mm year −1 and an azimuth of 75.17°with respect to SGOMRF14, which is very close to the inter-plate motions calculated from other three models.…”

“…Owing to the fact that this project is the first shield driven tunnel beneath the Hutuo River in Shijiazhuang, a significant concern regarding the riverbed deformation and tunneling safety occurred during the excavations. Based on our experiences from previous GPS monitoring projects [21][22][23][24][25], we established a GPS monitoring network with one base station (BASE) and six rover stations named GPS1, GPS2, GPS3, GPS4, GPS5, and GPS6 ( Figure 1b). The base station was installed at the headquarters of the project, about two kilometers away from the river (Figure 1a).…”

“…The southeastern margin of the relatively rigid Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands crustal block is the Anegada Rift, a normalsinistral rift separating this crust with the Lesser Antilles. This rift is estimated to be opening obliquely at >1.5 mm a −1 (Benford et al, 2012a;Liu and Wang, 2015), though some variability exists in the relative amounts of normal to sinistral motion.…”
