Relative nitrogen efficiency, a new indicator to assess crop livestock farming systems

Abstract: Improving nitrogen (N) efficiency is a priority for increasing food production while reducing its environmental impacts. N efficiency indicators are needed to achieve this goal, but current indicators have some limitations. In particular, current N efficiency indicators are not appropriate tools to compare farming systems with different types of production because animal N efficiency is, by nature, lower than crop N efficiency. A novel N efficiency indicator called "relative N efficiency" was developed to addr… Show more

“…Estimating the amount of N that enters and leaves the agroecosystem is important to reduce environmental impacts and also increase agricultural productivity through N use efficiency (Cassmann et al 2002;Godinot et al 2015). Recent work by Godinot et al (2015) proposed a system N use efficiency, taking into account net inputs and outputs, such as atmospheric N deposition, feed and litter, and biological N fixation.…”

Recent work by Godinot et al (2015) proposed a system N use efficiency, taking into account net inputs and outputs, such as atmospheric N deposition, feed and litter, and biological N fixation. In managed grasslands, specifically ones that are frequently cut, using the appropriate calculation method for potential N uptake by plants could be used as evaluation in a system N use efficiency calculation or for approximation of N loss due to frequent defoliation.…”

“…Three new indicators were developed to address these limitations (Godinot et al, 2015(Godinot et al, , 2014. In brief, SyNE (System N Efficiency) estimates N efficiency of a farming system i.e., the extent to which N inputs of a farming system are converted into N outputs.…”

“…We posit that publication of the development and application of indicators in international peer-reviewed journals is a good guarantee of their scientific quality. Godinot et al (2015Godinot et al ( , 2014 have done so, discussing their added value. Moreover, several recent publications have highlighted advantages of using comprehensive N efficiency indicators that include N losses occurring outside farm boundaries (Bodirsky et al, 2014;Mu et al, 2016;Sutton et al, 2013;Uwizeye et al, 2016).…”
