Sustainable development is a concept that strives to gain economic progress and to make developments in agriculture that stays for long without harming the environment. while conserving the soil biodiversity and environmental prolonged value. It also serves as a framework for integrating environmental regulations with development initiatives. Recently, there has been a pressing need to embrace greater sustainable farming methods, and a logical evaluation method is required to identify innovative management options. One kind of environmentally-friendly farming that has recently emerged is the integrated crop-livestock farming system. The importance of an integrated farm and livestock system for sustainable development, and the fact that integrated crop and livestock systems have been a foundation of agriculture for hundreds of years, imply a diverse range of integrated ecological, biophysical, and socioeconomic conditions. Sometimes it is difficult to maintain sustainable agriculture in dry areas like Bellary. Adopting an appropriate integrated agricultural system model is very important to achieve sustainability in lowland rice cultivation in the Tungabhadra project located in Karnataka. Continued rice cultivation and practice in the region have resulted in resource deprivation and condensed and decreased yields. The diminution of hereditary soil assets, the development of nuisance and pests scenarios like brown plant hopper, and the problem of weeds were also noticed.

The exponential increase in population and economic activities has led to the intensification of agriculture and aquaculture in developing countries. The Green Revolution in the 1960s and Blue Revolution in the 1980s were giant steps in this direction to meet the food demand of the burgeoning population. It resulted in the increased use of modern technology for the intensification of agriculture and aquaculture in India. However, coping with the ever-increasing demand for food has adversely impacted our environment. Hence, it is imperative that we explore sustainable practices that enable us to produce more food without compromising environmental integrity and human health. Integrated rice-fish farming is one such solution that optimizes use of resources, maintains sustainable environmental conditions and provides socio-economic stability to the farmers. This review summarizes the various integrated rice-fish cultivation systems practiced in India including traditional practices, their importance, recent development in this area and the existing challenges.

Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) is a set of interrelated agro-economic activities where the components interact in a particular agrarian setting. The main thrust is to minimize risks and increase profitability. Around 90-95 percent of nutritional requirements are self-supplied through resource recycling, which curtails the cost of cultivation and increases profit margins and employment. Considering the IFS's importance, this is a review of the productivity, problems, and suggestions for improving IFS. The study's methodology was to integrate the secondary sources. We found efficient integration of field crops with farm animals for sustainable production, income generation, and employment opportunities for resource-poor rural farm families. Financial support with technical assistance and guidance for improving the standard of living of the farm families is suggested. An integrated farming system demonstration center should be established in every district for potential farmers to easily visit them and be informed about IFS as an option.
