Relative performance of various integrated farming system models with respect to system productivity, economics and employment generation

Abstract: : A field experiment was conducted at Main Agricultural Research Station, Raichur (Karnataka) during 2012-13 and 2013-14 to evaluate the relative performance of different integrated farming system (IFS) models. Different combination of various crops, animals, fishes and poultry birds were examined in the form of seven integrated farming systems (IFS) models. The mean of two years indicated that, cotton based integrated farming system model F 7 recorded higher system productivity (10,903 kg/ha/ year) and net re… Show more

“…The study concluded that rice-fishpoultry may be successfully used under canal irrigation in the Tungabhadra Project area of Karnataka. Rice-fish-poultry was the best among the different models and models (Channabasavanna & Biradar, 2007). IFS has a method of Rice and fish farming and it plays a significant part in producing more nutrition, as the cohesive agricultural scheme outperforms rice culture or rice monoculture in rapports of source consumption, variability, efficiency, and together the excellence and amount of the products manufactured (Figure 2).…”

“…In a developing country like India, where a major portion of the population depends on agriculture and its allied sector for their source of income, the development of the agriculture sector would translate into improved profit and enhance employment opportunities for vulnerable farmers. In a study in Karnataka, it was observed that an additional employment of 41.4% was generated in integrated rice-fish culture and labor use efficiency was also higher as compared to rice monoculture (Channabasavanna and Biradar, 2007). Rautaray et al .…”

“…As diversification increased, income increased and reduced the dependency on a single product. Vinodakumar et al [28] reported that IFS model crop + goat + cow + poultry + fishery gave higher net returns (Rs 189,069/ha/yr compared to conventional cotton alone 74,552.0/ha/yr), which was 2.5 times better with the IFS system. It may be due to the inclusion of livestock components in the system, which generated regular income for the farmer.…”
