Relative Surface Area of the EQCM Quartz Crystals Vibrators

Abstract: The relative surface area, R sa , i.e., the ratio of the surface area in a three-dimensional space to that in a two-dimensional space, of quartz crystal vibrators, used for an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), was determined by atomic force microscopy in air, by coulometry in solution, and derived from the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller isotherms for xenon adsorption. The resulting R sa values were mutually consistent and were higher the better was the resolution of imaging.

“…Indeed, evaporated Au electrodes have a relatively low roughness. Poly(2,3′‐bithiophene) films adhere well to rough Au surfaces, [ 30 ] so the increase of the Au roughness via initial electrodeposition of Au improves adhesion of the macroporous MIP recognition part to the cantilever transducer and ensures the integrity of the chemosensor devices. The thickness of the Au underlayer was controlled by monitoring the number of current oscillation peaks (minima and maxima) of the chronoamperometric curves recorded during potentiostatic electroreductive deposition of Au on the Au electrode of the cantilevers (Figure S4, Supporting Information).…”

“…Fabrication of highly ordered colloidal crystals under our experimental conditions was difficult because the surface of the chemically unpolished Au-QCRs is relatively rough. 31 Deposition of MIP and NIP films on Au electrodes of quartz crystal resonators. The non-porous MIP films were deposited on gold electrodes of Au-QCRs using potentiodynamic polymerization, as described in our previous work.…”

“…The 5 mm diameter platinum film electrodes were sputtered on both crystal faces, one of which being exposed to solution. Matte-fished quartz crystals were used for good adherence of polymer films to the electrode surface [33]. A conventional three-electrode conical cell, equipped with a Ag=AgCl reference electrode and a Pt-wire auxiliary electrode, was used.…”
