Relaxation of superfluid turbulence in highly oblate Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract: We investigate thermal relaxation of superfluid turbulence in a highly oblate Bose-Einstein condensate. We generate turbulent flow in the condensate by sweeping the center region of the condensate with a repulsive optical potential. The turbulent condensate shows a spatially disordered distribution of quantized vortices and the vortex number of the condensate exhibits nonexponential decay behavior which we attribute to the vortex pair annihilation. The vortex-antivortex collisions in the condensate are identif… Show more

“…This procedure corresponds to the well-established technique of imprinting vortices by 'stirring' a Bose-Einstein condensed dilute atomic gas with the help of a laser [45,46]. Experimental methods have been refined for creating vortices in cold atomic gases [5,6,47,48] and exciton-polariton superfluids [8,9].…”

“…Quantized vortex dipoles were created in BECs by moving optical obstacles [9][10][11] and via quenching dynamics [12,13], and also observed in quasi-2D degenerate Bose gases [14]. Orbital motions of a single vortex dipole in a trapped BEC were investigated [10,13,15] and annihilation of vortex dipoles was indirectly probed in relaxation of superfluid turbulence in highly oblate BECs [16].…”
