Relaying Controller Area Network Frames over Wireless Internetworks for Automotive Testing Applications

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper we describe how Controller Area Network (CAN) frames can be relayed over a wireless Internet connection, enabling remote access to the CAN buses of vehicles for applications in automotive telematics. This opens up many new possibilities for diagnostics, monitoring, testing, analysis and verification, which we believe can significantly reduce the time required for the testing and verification phases of automotive development. A CAN-over-IP tunneling protocol is described and the design an… Show more

“…A wireless solution with an IEEE 802.11b WLAN was proposed by Bayilmis et al [15]. Similar to our approach, Johanson et al [16] developed a CAN-over-IP tunneling protocol for diagnostic and monitoring purposes. Our approach utilize Cannelloni [17] gateway software to relay the selected CAN messages of two systems over an IP tunnel.…”

“…Our study aims to enable remote control of the tractor interconnecting the in-vehicle CAN of the tractor and the CAN bus of the remote control system. CAN traffic relaying over IP networks has been identified as a potential solution for monitoring and remote controlling vehicles [13][14][15][16]. Cannelloni [17] is a software that allows controller area networks to be connected over a local area network but does not support secure data transmission over the internet or a mobile network.…”

“…First, researchers have adapted the software-defined networking paradigm for CAN [7], [8], [9], which is mainly hardware-based and tailored for in-vehicle networking on CAN physical channels rather than long-range overlays. For range relaying of CAN frames, CAN-to-Ethernet research has been conducted [10], [11] to transport data logged from one network to a remote endpoint, but this did not address configurability or network performance. X-in-the-loop (hardware, driver, vehicle, etc.)…”

“…Todos os elementos conectados à CAN, excetuando-se pelos terminadores, são chamados de nós [16]. Um nó pode ser um sensor CAN, como o SAS que será tratado posteriormente, ou outra ferramenta compatível com o protocolo, como um scanner de diagnóstico automotivo [18].…”
