Release of clove essential oil loaded by mesoporous nano‐silica in polylactic acid‐based food packaging on postharvest preservation of white button mushroom

Abstract: This work prepared a controlled release food packaging film by solvent volatilization using polylactic acid (PLA) and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) loaded with clove essential oil (CEO). White button mushrooms were packaged with PLA and CEO-loaded MSN PLA composite films to investigate postharvest qualities. The result indicated that PMC-3 film improves the postharvest qualities of Agaricus bisporus, as reflected by lower weight loss (7.03%), higher total phenolics (2.29 g/kg), and ascorbic acid (27.1… Show more

“…All these findings suggest that CLEO immobilized-MSN in PLA nanocomposite film can be used as a promising/potential candidate for antimicrobial/AP material. In a following study, the same team applied PLA films containing MSNs with immobilized CLEO for packaging of white button mushrooms and followed its postharvest quality during storage at 4 • C (Zhu et al, 2022). The controlled release of CLEO loaded in MSNs from the activated PLA film significantly retarded microbial growth (yeasts, molds, and psychotropic bacteria) during the storage of mushrooms compared with PLA films alone.…”

“…Due to the addition of CEO, the log 10 CFU/mL values decreased, indicating that PMC films effectively suppressed the development of microbes. As a result, PMC films could be utilised to preserve the quality of white button mushrooms and extend their shelf life [ 185 ].…”
