Relevance of Helicobacter pylori infection in Egyptian multiple sclerosis patients

Abstract: BackgroundMultiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disorder. The etiology of MS remains unknown exactly. Helicobacter pylori heat shock proteins were suggested as a potential trigger of immune system causing MS.ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to assess the level of anti-Helicobacter pylori heat shock proteins 60 (Hp hsp60) antibodies at patients of MS and to correlate it with various epidemiological and clinical data.Subjects and methodsThis study design was a cross-sectional case control one… Show more

“…Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative spiral-shaped bacterium [1] with worldwide distribution. About 58% (varying from 39.9-91.7%) of the global population is estimated to be colonized with H. pylori and its prevalence is even higher in less-industrialized countries [2][3][4]. H. pylori can cause chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric adenocarcinoma, as well as mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma [5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…In the line with our study, previous investigations showed an association between SPMS and HP IgG seropositivity. 19 , 20 On univariate model, EDSS score and SPMS had association with HP IgG seropositivity, but in multivariate model, only SPMS had association. It is possible, therefore, that the association of HP infection with EDSS score is related to high EDSS score in SP course.…”

“…Whilst some research has been carried out on the patients with MS, limited studies have attempted to investigate the association of HP infection with different clinical courses of MS. Interestingly, it has been suggested that HP infection may have association with secondary progressive MS (SPMS). 19 , 20 Also, a longitudinal study found high proportion of patients with CIS with HP infection and proposed that eradication of HP infection might reduce the risk of conversion from CIS to definite MS. 21 …”

“…Its prevalence is about 58% (varying from 39.9% to 91.7%). 7,73 Likewise, there has been noticed a remarkable increase in the incidence of EoE in the last two decades, constituting EoE nowadays as a major etiology of UGI morbidity. 35,37 According to the recent data, a global average EoE incidence is 3.7/100,000 per year, with variations ranging from 2.1/100,000 per year in the Netherlands to 12.8/100,000 per year in the United States (Ohio).…”
