“…The frequencies of polymorphisms in the IL-1B and IL-1RN genes found in this study were similar to those described in European populations [37,38]. Genetic polymorphisms involved in the regulation of gastric acid secretion may to be associated with host susceptibility to the acquisition of H. pylori infection and to the development of gastric pathologies [18,36].…”

“…Previous studies have found that the IL-1Ra/IL-1 ratio is influenced by genetic variations in IL1RN (Barlo et al 2011; Carter et al 2004). Higher IL-1 protein levels were found in gastric mucosa from Helicobacter pylori -infected individuals that carried VNTR*2 (Garcia-Gonzalez et al 2009), while lower IL-Ra protein levels were found in biopsies from ulcerative colitis patients with VNTR*2 (Carter et al 2004). Together, this indicates that carriers of VNTR*2 have low levels of IL-1Ra but higher IL-1 levels.…”

“…For example, the gastric mucosa of H. pylori-infected patients has increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-8 and TNF-␣ (8,13,22,40). IL-8 and TNF-␣ have a central role in the modification of the cellular microenvironment (4,30,40).…”
