Relevance of Objective Measures in Psychiatric Disorders—Rest-Activity Rhythm and Psychophysiological Measures

Abstract: Purpose of Review We present a review of recent methods of objective measurement in psychiatry and psychology with a focus on home monitoring and its utility in guiding treatment. Recent Findings For individualized diagnostics and treatment of insomnia, actigraphy can generate clinically useful graphical presentations of sleep timing and patterns. Psychophysiological measures may complement psychometrics by tracking parallel changes in physiologica… Show more

“…The dosage and dosing time of melatonin could be different depending on the abnormalities of sleep and circadian rhythms as observed in patients with psychiatric disorders. We recently reviewed the objective methods of measuring sleep and circadian rhythms [90]. Clinically, actigraphy is the most suitable and useful objective device for measurement.…”

“…Overnight polysomnography is a standard tool in sleep medicine for evaluating sleep-related pathophysiology, sleep architecture, and sleep integrity ( 26 ). Actigraphy characterized by well circadian rhythms and circadian rhythm disorders also is an effect method of objective measurement for insomnia ( 27 , 28 ). The PSQI and ISI questionnaires are short subjective tools to measure insomnia symptoms and consequences, and they are also used in this study.…”

“…Among these, the subjective measurement method is generally used to measure emotional expression, using relatively mature and recognized questionnaires with high reliability and validity, such as the Basic Emotion Scale (BES; Power, 2006) and the Pleasure Arousal Dominance Scale (PDAS; Kulviwat et al, 2007). On the other hand, the objective measurement method measures the physiological indicators and behaviors of its subjects, mainly including the measurement of the autonomic nervous system (Moon et al, 2021), the measurement of the activity in the brain (Zhao et al, 2021), and the measurement of behavior (Kümmel & Kimmerle, 2020). All the above-mentioned methods have dominated the field of emotional psychology until simpler and more efficient machine learning (ML) methods appeared and were applied to psychology research.…”
