Reliability analysis of a crashed thin-walled s-rail accounting for random spot weld failures

Abstract: Possibly the most common application of spot welding is in the automobile manufacturing industry, where it is almost universally used to weld the sheet metal car components. However, due to manufacturing inaccuracies and fatigue failures an important number of spot welds may be missing in an operational vehicle. It seems that in order to properly analyze reliability of such structures, in particular crashworthiness reliability, the spot weld failures must be considered. Representing properties of each spot weld… Show more

“…To perform robust optimization in NumpressExplore [33][34][35], you have to define random variables, design variables, objective functions, and constraint functions. For this type of optimization, it is necessary to use an appropriate type of design variables named in the program "random design variable".…”

“…It is vital to assess real failures and conduct structural reliability design to verify that these structures are adequately constructed to resist impact loads in order to reduce this type of damage. 7 To do so, precise prediction of the impact load that induces plastic deformation is required.…”

“…This paper shows large differences in the assessment of how the safety of a structure can appear when we incorrectly estimate the standard deviation of the random variable responsible for the imperfections of node locations. The reliability analysis is conducted with Numpress Explore software, developed at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw [42][43][44][45].…”
