Reliability and validity of PROMIS measures administered by telephone interview in a longitudinal localized prostate cancer study

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the reliability and validity of six PROMIS measures (anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain interference, physical function, sleep disturbance) telephone-administered to a diverse, population-based cohort of localized prostate cancer patients. Methods: Newly-diagnosed men were enrolled in the North Carolina Prostate cancer Comparative Effectiveness and Survivorship Study. PROMIS measures were telephone-administered pre-treatment (baseline), and at 3-months and 12-months post-treatment initia… Show more

“…PROMIS measures included anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain interference, sleep disturbance, diarrhea, erectile function, sexual satisfaction, and physical function. PROMIS measures have undergone rigorous evaluation, including validation in men with prostate cancer . PROMIS scores are normed to the US general population at a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10.…”

“…PROMIS measures have undergone rigorous evaluation, including validation in men with prostate cancer. [18][19][20][21] PROMIS scores are normed to the US general population at a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10. Higher symptom scores reflect increased symptom burden, and higher function scores reflect better functioning.…”

“…However, the current analyses may not be able to be replicated among samples of patients with prostate cancer who have much less anxiety. 49 Our linking tables should be used with the knowledge that concordance between the scores of any 2 instruments may be sensitive to population differences, regardless of the linking method. 34 However, the results of a recent study have suggested that these population differences can be minor; we found that the linking relationships for PROMIS Pain Interference and the Brief Pain Inventory were very similar when obtained from the general population versus patients with multiple sclerosis.…”

“…Patient‐reported anxiety and depression are measured with the Patient‐Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) scale, which has been validated for use in the general population as well as adults diagnosed with chronic conditions, including cancer . A higher PROMIS score indicates greater anxiety/depression.…”
