Reliability and validity of the Croatian version of Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) Measure in primary care setting

Abstract: AimTo translate the Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) Measure into Croatian and validate the Croatian version of the questionnaire.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in July 2011 in 8 general practices (GP) in Croatia. Following two stages of translation, back-translation, and pilot testing, the Croatian version of the CARE was tested on 568 consecutive patients.ResultsFace validity was high, the number of missing values was low (9%), and the internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) was 0.77.… Show more

“…From the ten-item scale, 15 almost all the studies examined including ours found a single-factor structure, with items loading highly on one factor (above 0.70). 24 Consistent with previous research, our study supported the construct validity as the CARE Measure items loaded highly on one factor, showing that they captured the same concept. The only exception was the study by Hanževački et al, who extracted a two-factor structure with a percent variance of 43.6% and reliability coefficient of 0.77.…”

“…Patients' perception of their physician's empathy was assessed using the Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) measure (37). This instrument has been extensively validated and found reliable in different populations, healthcare settings and countries (38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44). The CARE measure consists of 10 items with answers on a 5-point rating scale (1 = poor to 5 = excellent; Cronbach's alpha was 0.96); see Table 2.…”
