Reliability assessment of an autonomous underwater vehicle propulsion by using electrical multi-phase drive

Abstract: This paper investigates the reliability of 3-phase, 2×3-phase and 5-phase inverters for a marine propulsion application. Analytical formulae and thermal model are used to assess the junction temperature of the semiconductors. The overall failure rate of the inverter is calculated by using the individual failure rate of each semiconductor, which depends on its junction temperature. In case of open-phase fault, state transition diagrams show the reconfiguration capabilities and Markov models are used to quantify… Show more

“…For a method based on backpropagation neural networks, the update rate of the backpropagation process is crucial. Typically, its objective function is defined as shown in (3), which represents the squared difference between the desired motor speed and the actual speed. E k is the cost function regarding the reference value r k and real output value y k .…”

“…T HREE-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSMs) represents a contemporary variant of PMSM technology, boasting notable attributes such as high energy density, robust fault tolerance, and reduced torque ripple [1], [2]. Consequently, it exhibits significant potential for deployment in future generations of automated guided vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles [3], [4]. In these application scenarios, numerous stochastic disturbances arise.…”

“…In , reliability and faulttolerance of multiphase traction motors based on Markov models for multistate systems have been discussed. In Olmi et al (2015), a reliability assessment of a multiphase electric drive for underwater vehicle propulsion has been done. It investigates the reliability of three-phase, two three-phase and five-phase inverters.…”

“…The replacement of a faulty transistor is simply implemented, but it demands redundant components and TRIACs in order to isolate the faulty transistor and connect the healthy one to the system, increasing thus the system cost [8]. In the case of two-star 6-phase machines, it is possible to disconnect the star supplied by the faulty transistor [9], but it halves the maximum power that the machine may generate. Multiphase machine has DoF that are usually not used in normal functioning mode, but they can be controlled in degraded mode to reduce the torque ripple.…”
