This article discusses reliability of landers and provides a review and examples of correlated reliability. Examples are cited to show generally beneficial effects of correlation in system reliability. Then, reliabilities of two near future landing systems are studied using two analytical (Downton, and Marshall & Olkin) bivariate exponential distributions and two simulation methods that incorporate correlation in reliability calculations. Both landing systems are composed of correlated two-unit subsystems. Numerical examples show mean system life, standard deviation of the system life, mean system life confidence interval, and reliability for each lander’s propulsive descent. Both simulation method results are in between the results obtained from the two analytical methods and Downton’s method yields the most conservative reliability. This article also shows how the Downton method–based reliability value can be predicted as a function of the reliabilities obtained from the other three methods. An up-to-date literature review of all related topics is also provided.

To increase the efficiency of new structures and perform safety evaluations of existing structures, it is necessary to model and analyse the non‐linear behaviour of reinforced concrete. The applicability of the safety formats in present design codes is unclear for indeterminate structures subjected to loading in several directions. The safety formats in fib Model Code 2010 have been evaluated for a reinforced concrete frame subjected to vertical and horizontal loading and the influence of load history studied. Basic reliability methods were used together with response surfaces to assess the failure probabilities and one safety format did not meet the intended safety level. The results indicate the importance of load history and it is concluded that more research is required regarding how load history influences the safety level of complex structures.

Structural Reliability Analysis (SRA) is a method for estimating the reliability or probability of failure of a structure, a structural member, or a structural element. This analysis is in turn based on a physical model which represents both the load and resistance of the system. An offshore jacket is analysed for structural reliability and the major load on the jacket is found to take a parametric equation proportional to the maximum wave height impeding the platform. Reserve Strength Ratio (RSR) is used as a general term to describe the resistance of the system. Probability of failure of the structure is then calculated using FORM/SORM using MATLAB for different assumed values of RSR, and acceptance criteria of RSR for west coast of India is also discussed.
