Reliability Assessment of Transformerless PV Inverters considering Mission Profiles

Abstract: Due to the small volume and high efficiency, transformerless inverters have gained much popularity in grid-connected PV applications, where minimizing leakage current injection is mandatory. This can be achieved by either modifying the modulation schemes or adding extra power switching devices, resulting in an uneven distribution of the power losses on the switching devices. Consequently, the device thermal loading is redistributed and thus may alter the entire inverter reliability performance, especially unde… Show more

“…A physics-of-failure assessment is understood through the failure mechanisms of the components of power converters and external physical stressors, such as ambient temperature, solar irradiance, and relative humidity [19], [20], [21]. Some studies included the reliability of inverters with different topologies [22], [23]. Other studies included the detailed prediction of the reliability of IGBTs for medium-and high-power inverter applications [24], [25], [26].…”

“…5. However, the removal of isolation transformers can generate leakage currents in the system, which may be addressed by specifically designing the modulation schemes [5], [14]. Although single-phase grid-connections are more commonly seen in PV applications, increasing demands in power push the rating of PV systems higher.…”

“…Furthermore, similar to the WTS, reliability is getting more importance in power electronics (including PV systems). This can contribute to extended total energy production and reduced cost of energy [18], [33], [34]. Finally, because of exposure or smaller housing chamber, the PV converter should be more temperature insensitive, which in return is good from the reliability point of view.…”
