Reliability, feasibility and satisfaction of telemedicine evaluations for cervical dystonia

Abstract: Introduction Telemedicine is used successfully for evaluating patients with neurologic diseases, but has not been tested in Cervical Dystonia (CD). CD is uniquely suited for telemedicine as the scales validated to assess its severity rely only on visual inspection. The study sought to determine reliability, feasibility and satisfaction of telemedicine visits for evaluating CD. Methods Patients 18 years and older with a diagnosis of CD and scheduled for botulinum toxin (BoNT) injections were recruited, with a t… Show more

“…For patients with cervical dystonia, telemedicine was found useful to evaluate the efficacy of botulinum toxin during its peak effect. Overall, the agreement between the Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS) motor severity subscale assessed in clinic vs. telemedicine visits was excellent, with good acceptance among users [ 63 ]. Other candidates for teletreatment are those homebound persons with movement disorders and multimorbid conditions.…”

“…The session was video recorded and the TWSTRS was scored at a later date using the recorded session. It has been shown that there is excellent agreement between the TWSTRS motor severity domain when it is administered in-person vs. when it is administered during a telemedicine evaluation (17). Lastly, physical function was assessed using the five times sit to stand (FTSTS) (36).…”

“…Tele-yoga, similarly, to telemedicine and telerehabilitation, can be delivered synchronously (in real-time) or asynchronously (through prerecorded materials). Telemedicine has been used successfully for the evaluation of individuals with CD (17). There is currently an interest in telerehabilitation approaches for this population as indicated in a recently published paper demonstrating telerehabilitation exercises for individuals with CD (18).…”

“…The International Medical Network for the Prompt Registration of Human Coronavirus is a distributed telemedicine network that provides access to interconnected virtual telemedicine centers located on various digital services in different countries. The international medical network for the rapid registration of coronavirus is formed by hundreds of millions of 5 G network servers located around the world, using computer and telecommunication technologies and smart artificial intelligence systems for medical communication [4][5]. Intelligent artificial intelligence solves problems, implements processes, develops and makes decisions by interaction of virtual essential agents hierarchically performing actions according to rules and based on experience [6].…”
