Reliability Improvement of a Diesel Engine Using the FMETA Approach

Abstract: This paper provides a way to deal with issues related to design for reliability using axiomatic design (AD). A theoretical approach is studied, starting from the traditional theory of AD, in order to help designers to optimize the product's reliability using a structured approach. The aim of this work is to introduce a new method that is able to assess the product reliability using the support of the AD methodology combined with other methods, e.g. FMEA and FTA. The approach developed is called failure mode an… Show more

“…Theory of the resolution of invention-related tasks (TRIZ) [9], Failure Mode and Effect Tree Analysis (FMETA) [10], and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) [11,12] are among several methodologies that have been developed and applied to improve system reliability in various domains. TRIZ, for instance, has been used -among several applicationsto increase quality and reliability with regard to the manufacturing process of an industry that designs and builds molds and equipment to produce aluminum food containers [13].…”

“…FMETA looks for the most critical characteristics of the product from a reliability point of view, and provides the designer with a set of possible changes. FMETA has been successfully applied, for instance, to develop a reliability tree to evaluate both the RPN for the component of the product and to find the reliability relation useful for the following optimization, validated by an application to an automotive heavy-duty diesel engine [10]. FTA, namely, Comparative FTA, has proved useful to compare the reliability of an electronic braking system with its mechanical counterpart [14].…”

“…The FMEA needs to be updated continuously prior to design release. Arcidiacono and Campatelli (2004) introduced an approach of failure mode and effect tree analysis (FMETA) for the reliability design process. Tolerances are defined as the limit at which some economically measurable action is taken (Fowlkes and Creveling, 1995).…”

“…In order to confirm the value of quality risk and the priority to adopting measures in advance according to the latent severity, we use Quality Relation Weight (QRW, W QR ) coefficient to quantitate the quality risk of each node bottom-up. The function and usage of W QR resemble the Risk Priority Number (RPN) in FMEA (see Arccidiacono and Campatelli 16 and Srikesh and Robert 17 ). We propose an approach to satisfy these requirements by means of the data mining method of Rough Set (see Angel et al 18 and Zeng 19 ) and the multiattribute decision-making technique of Fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (Fuzzy TOPSIS) (see Facchinetti 20 and Braglia 21 ) based on the quality data collected.…”

“…To improve reliability of CTQsP, the occurred and latent failure modes both should be addressed in advance, and usually the possibly latent failures can be evolved into the occurred ones. Decision parameters of quality relation weight such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), classifications of failure modes, frequencies distribution of failure modes and criticality analysis can be mined from quality data collected by Design of Experiment (see Fredrik 22 ), qualitative analysis (see Arccidiacono and Campatelli 16 ) and statistical analysis (see Srikesh and Robert 17 ).…”
