The interest for modular multilevel converter (MMC) with energy storage systems (ESSs) has increased quickly over the last decades. Since an MMC has several hundreds of sub-modules (SMs) and ESS performances usually deteriorate quickly, the ability of the converter to provide the expected service during its lifetime must be investigated. In this work, supercapacitors are used as ESS and the reduction of their capacity is first calculated through lifetime simulation of the ESS using aging models. Then, simulations are used to analyze the available energy of the proposed converter considering dispersions for the initial parameters of ESSs and for the aging rate. Finally, the results are compared with different levels of redundancy and maintenance intervals to discuss the viability of the solution. For the depicted case study, results show that oversizing the ESSs without carrying any maintenance operations during the lifetime of the converter minimizes the total number of cells required.

Availability Analysis of HVDC-VSC Systems: A Review

This work stems from the worldwide increasing need to precisely consider, in the design phase of an HVDC project, the availability of the HVDC system. In this paper, an overview of the availability assessment methods for HVDC-VSC transmission systems is presented. In particular, the state of the art of the procedures to estimate the availability of both the HVDC link reparable components and the conversion system on the basis of the converter configuration is given. The theoretical fundamentals of each method, together with their practical applications, have been described, in order to highlight the limits and the potentialities of each approach. The authors aim at giving a guide to choosing the best computation approach on the basis of the specific needs of the users and at summarizing all the key aspects which can be taken into account during the availability assessment of HVDC-VSC links.

Summary The modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are frequently preferred for medium and high power energy conversion systems thanks to their modular structure and high quality output waveform. The remarkable studies related to the MMC have been carried out in recent years, which are mainly focused on its topology, control, or application. In this paper, MMC circuit topologies consisting of traditional submodule cells and new proposed configurations are introduced, and their control process, modulation techniques, and application areas are discussed in order to provide the readers the current state of the art of MMC technology. A wide part of this article is devoted to demonstrate the recent contributions arising in MMC studies. In this context, this paper not only outlines the circuit topology, control objectives, and applications of the MMC but also presents a comprehensive review, principally in terms of the latest developments of it. Ultimately, detailed proposals and new possible topics are provided to drive future expectations of MMC technology.
