Reliability of an instrument to determine lower limb comfort in professional football

Abstract: Aims and ObjectivesThis study extends previous work in the field of injury awareness using a novel lower limb comfort index (LLCI), which was developed to assess comfort in professional football. Participants rated comfort for designated anatomical segments of the lower limb utilizing a seven point Likert scale. The aims of the study were (i) to assess the reliability of the LLCI in a competitive football environment (Australian Rules and Rugby League), and (ii) to assess whether LLCI measurements were respons… Show more

“…Three studies used the Hassles and Uplifts Scale (HUS) [123] and showed greater daily hassles to be associated with increased injury in soccer players [37, 92, 93]. Findings from Kinchington et al [94] support the notion that increased perceptual fatigue is related to increased injury as ‘poor’ scores on the Lower-Limb Comfort Index (LLCI) [124] (i.e. an increase in perceptual fatigue) were related to increased lower-limb injury ( r  = 0.88; p  < 0.001) in elite contact-sport athletes.…”

“…On the other hand, published IAQ checklists have been restricted to “yes” or “no” answers, which focus only on finding absolute and no numerical weightage in calculating the cumulative risk present 3–5. Quite recently, a new action checklist on OSH has been developed 4,23,24…”

“…Prospective lower-limb comfort was recorded for all players during the study using the previously validated Lower Limb Comfort Index (LLCI) (Kinchington, Ball, & Naughton, 2010). Lower-limb comfort zones for each player were established using criteria previously described (Kinchington et al, 2010).…”
