Reliability of Capillary Complete Blood Count in Children With Acute Gastroenteritis

Abstract: Background: To assess the reliability of complete blood count (CBC) in the capillary blood of children with acute gastroenteritis (AGE), with a focus on leukocytes. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. Complete blood count was compared between the capillary and venous blood in children admitted to a pediatric gastroenterology department with primary diagnosis of AGE (ICD-10 A09, A08.0, A08.2).

“…Blood proportions of immune cells, such as monocytes, lymphocytes, and granulocytes, are tightly regulated in healthy individuals [1]. Deviations from normative immune cell proportions can be used to predict and monitor the progression of many diseases and conditions including chronic inflammation, viral infections, arterial disease, coronary heart disease, gastroenteritis, endocrine disorders, leukemia, and lymphoma [2][3][4][5][6]. Thus, it is critical to accurately measure the proportion of circulating immune cell subtypes for both diagnosis and monitoring of disease progress [7,8].…”
