Reliability of gravure offset printing under various printing conditions

Abstract: This paper focuses on the reliability of gravure offset printing and presents a mechanism on how the width of the printed line increases on repeated printings. Of the various printing process parameters, such as the resting times between doctoring, off, and set, printing velocity, printing pressure, and so forth, we investigated the effects of printing velocity, printing pressure, and blanket’s thickness on the reliability of gravure offset printing. As the printing velocity increases, the reliability of gravu… Show more

“…2,6 It is assumed that material properties such as ink and adhesion are well established for ink transfer, 12 and they have been left out of the discussion. The offset printing process should be incorporated into a roll-to-roll system to obtain the benefit of productivity; however, roll-to-plate system is generally used to develop, analyze, and evaluate the process itself, 1,8,11 and this paper has used the roll-to-plate system for the abovementioned reasons.…”

“…To improve the performance of printed electronics, it is important that the accuracy and reliability of the printing process are secured. 2,5,11 In this paper, offset printing processes such as reverse offset 1 and gravure offset 11 printing are analyzed in order to obtain physical insights into how to print fine patterns and how to improve the registration accuracy of printed patterns in view of the mechanics, because offset printing is a promising candidate for the manufacture of printed electronics due to its high productiviy and fine patterning capability. 2,6 It is assumed that material properties such as ink and adhesion are well established for ink transfer, 12 and they have been left out of the discussion.…”

“…The limited time of contact and higher speed also enable high-resolution patterning on the substrate and increase reliability of the system. Reliability of gravure offset is more critical for assembling in a high-speed production line of printed electronics on rollable substrates [58]. Combinations of various manipulating forces such as adhesive force between the blanket and the ink, cohesive force within the ink when on the blanket, adhesive force between the ink and the gravure, and adhesive force between the ink and the target substrate are of particular importance to control and tune for efficient transfer of ink.…”

“…2 3 This adoption is mainly caused by the facts that the process is one of the most cost-effective patterning methods and the patterning quality is relatively higher than other printing techniques. 2 The gravure offset printing uses viscous inks or pastes that are mainly comprised of solvent, binders, dispersing agents and solute particles. This means that a post treatment at high temperatures is essential to transform the printed paste into conductive tracks by the application Delivered by Ingenta to: Imperial College London IP: 185.101.71.45 On: Sun, 05 Jun 2016 08:13:20…”
