Reliability of measurement of muscle tone and muscle power in stroke patients

Abstract: the Medical Research Council scale was reliable in the tested muscle groups. The modified Ashworth scale demonstrated reliability in all tested muscle groups except the ankle plantarflexors. If reliable measurement of tone at the ankle is required for a specific purpose (e.g. to measure the effect of therapeutic intervention), further work will be necessary.

“…The initial arm and hand motor function stages were evaluated using the Chedoke-McMaster Stroke Assessments (CMSA) [22], which has a range of stages from one to seven. The Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) [26,27], a 6-point scale ranging from 0-4, was used to grade initial spasticity level of paralytic upper limbs.…”

“…Accordingly, this study chose elbow flexor tone on the assumption that elbow muscle tone is usually present 6) . MAS has high inter-rater reliability (weight κ=0.77-0.96) and intra-rater reliability (weight κ=0.77-0.83) 24) . Its score ranges from 0 to 4, and high points mean hypertone, and low tone means flaccidity of the upper extremities.…”
