Reliability of Measuring Lesion Volumes in Transient Ischemic Attack and Minor Stroke

Abstract: Background and Purpose-Lesion volume measurements in disabling ischemic stroke have excellent reliability, but it is not clear whether this is also true for small lesions. We assessed the reliability of measuring baseline and follow-up lesion volumes in transient ischemic attack and minor stroke. Methods-Patients who presented with a transient ischemic attack or minor stroke (NIHSS Յ3) who had brain MRI within 24 hours from symptom onset and at 30-day follow-up and had an acute lesion on baseline MRI were incl… Show more

“…Collateral status by use of the rLMC score (0 -20) was trichotomized into 3 groups: good (17)(18)(19)(20), intermediate (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16), and poor (0 -10), according to previously published literature. 3 Differences between these 3 groups were assessed by means of the Fisher exact test for proportions, 1-way ANOVA for parametric data, and a rank sum test for nonparametric data.…”

“…We have previously shown a high intra and inter-rater reliability in measurement of small acute DWI and follow-up FLAIR lesions in this population. 27 All images were first reviewed by a neuroradiologist (J.M. ), and all measurements were performed by consensus among 3 investigators (N.A., J.I.C., and J.M.…”

“…The DWI lesion volumes are small but comparable to volumes found in acute stroke patients by other groups [27]. A recent study demonstrates excellent inter-rater and intra-rater reliability when measuring small (<5 mL) infarct volumes [28]. One-month FLAIR infarct volume has been found to be highly correlated with, and a good approximation of, final infarct volume [29].…”
