Reliability of the identification of functional ankle instability (Idfai) scale across different age groups in adults

Abstract: Background:Functional ankle instability (FAI) is the tendency of the foot to ‘give way’. Identification of Functional Ankle Instability questionnaire (IdFAI) is a newly developed questionnaire to detect whether individuals meet the minimum criteria necessary for inclusion in an FAI population. However, the reliability of the questionnaire was studied only in a restricted age group.Aim:The purpose of this investigation was to examine the reliability of IdFAI across different age groups in adults.Materials and M… Show more

“…The prevalence of CAI was determined by having the participants complete the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI). This validated instrument asks respondents to complete 1 question regarding their total previous ankle sprains, scored numerically, and 9 Likert-scale questions that focus on symptoms such as the ankle “giving way” or “feeling unstable.” 6,17,42 Participants who have a total ankle score of ≥11 are considered to have CAI in that limb. CAI prevalence was calculated by taking the number of participants who reported an IdFAI score of ≥11 for at least 1 ankle and dividing that number by the total number of participants.…”

“…Additionally, reliability of the IdFAI has been established across several adult age groups. 166 Likewise, the AII has been translated into Chinese, 273 French, 286 and Persian, 316 with evidence to support their use. One systematic review questioned the use of validated instruments translated and cross-culturally adapted for Brazilian Portuguese after critical analysis of their psychometric properties.…”

“…A total score of 10 or lower indicates that the participant is unlikely to have functional instability, whereas a total score of 11 or higher indicates that the participant is likely to have functional instability [31]. High accuracy (89.6 % [31], 87.8 % [32]), test-retest reliability (ICC[1, 2]) = 0.978 in the 20-30 year age group) [33], and discriminability (area under curve = 0.91, sensitivity = 0.83, specificity = 0.94, positive likelihood ratio = 13.83, and negative likelihood ratio = 0.18 [31]) have been reported for the IdFAI.…”
