Reliability, validity and factorial structure of the Arabic version of the international suicide prevention trial (InterSePT) scale for suicidal thinking in schizophrenia patients in Doha, Qatar

Abstract: BackgroundPatients with schizophrenia are known to have higher rates of mortality and morbidity when compared to the general population. Suicidality is a major contributor to increased mortality. The International Suicide Prevention Trial (InterSePT) Scale for Suicidal Thinking (ISST) is a validated tool to assess current suicidal ideation in patients with schizophrenia. The aims of the study were to culturally adapt the Arabic translation of ISST and to examine the psychometric characteristics of the Arabic v… Show more

“…The diagnosis of these patients was confirmed by the Arabic version of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI-6) [26,27], which relied on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) criteria [28] (APA, 2000). The Arabic version of the MINI has been utilized before in several studies from Qatar [29][30][31]. Recruitment of the control group (n = 101) happened at the primary health care centers in Doha.…”

“…We used the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) to differentiate between depression and negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients and the International Suicide Prevention Trial (InterSePT) scale for the evaluation of suicidal ideation. All the scales used were the Arabic versions that were validated for use in Arabspeaking subjects [29,34,35]. Four research assistants were trained to administer these scales similarly to all subjects involved in the study.…”

“…This cross-sectional study is part of a project aiming to validate the Arabic versions of psychiatric scales used in the assessment of patients with schizophrenia in the Arab population residing in Qatar (Hammoudeh et al 2016;Hani et al 2016;Yehya et al 2016;Yehya et al 2017). This paper reports a secondary analysis of the relationship between the Arabic MINI6-Mod-K and PANSS.…”

“…Schizophrenia, the focus of the current research, is associated with higher rates of morbidity and mortality than the general population (Fuller & Hollister, 2016; Hammoudeh et al, 2016). Between 40% and 80% of schizophrenia patients develop suicide ideation (Barrett et al, 2010; Melle & Barrett, 2012; Stip, Caron, Tousignant, & Lecomte, 2017), 20%–40% attempt suicide during the course of their illness (Lyu & Zhang, 2014; Suokas et al, 2010; Yildiz, Yazici, & Böke, 2010), and with a lifetime risk of suicide estimated to be 3.23% (Dutta et al, 2010; Palmer, Pankratz, & Bostwick, 2005).…”

“…Although rates of completed and attempted suicides in schizophrenia are lower than in other psychiatric conditions (Ventriglio et al, 2016), yet, these figures are still unacceptably high, suggesting the need to identify the characteristics and risk factors of attempted suicide in schizophrenia, as a first step to prevent suicide in this vulnerable group (Hammoudeh et al, 2016; Hor & Taylor, 2010).…”
