Relics and transformation of former ponds in the urban environment of the historical region of Bohemia (Czech Republic)

Abstract: The rapid expansion of urban areas has been a feature of the industrial age. Landscape features have been replaced or transformed to accommodate the needs of an increasingly urban society. Our study focuses on the disappearance or transformation of man-made ponds in the historic region of Bohemia in the Czech Republic. “…This method was used for historic pond counts by Jeffries (2011) who successfully audited pond features greater than 4 m in diameter from 1:10,000 maps of Northumbria from the 1860s. In addition research from Poland identified waterbodies from 1:28,000 military maps of the 1800s at minimum 0.5 ha (Pavelková et al, 2016) and maximum 3 ha (Frajer et al, 2020) scale. Minimum features size should be considered when analysing map data.…”
