Relieving the wireless infrastructure: When opportunistic networks meet guaranteed delays

Abstract: Abstract-Major wireless operators are nowadays facing network capacity issues in striving to meet the growing demands of mobile users. At the same time, 3G-enabled devices increasingly benefit from ad hoc radio connectivity (e.g., Wi-Fi). In this context of hybrid connectivity, we propose Push-and-track, a content dissemination framework that harnesses ad hoc communication opportunities to minimize the load on the wireless infrastructure while guaranteeing tight delivery delays. It achieves this through a cont… Show more

“…A node is either the personal device of a user, which moves with the user, or a fixed station, as in the case of a road-side gateway to/from a wired network. Thus, we are considering a hybrid urban network infrastructure [10], [20]. Throughout this paper, all nodes, whether fixed or mobile, have the same capabilities; each node operates as source, recipient and forwarder of messages with specified interests.…”

“…The correctness property guarantees that recipients without interest about I are not spammed with unwanted messages, that is, it excludes broadcast (adopted, e.g., in [20]). The effectiveness property has to do with user satisfaction and delivery fairness.…”

“…Since then, this idea has been adapted in different proposals in wireless networks. To reduce delays, multiple copies of data are shared within the cooperative network that operates on the short-range links [6]. To recover errors from cellular links, error correction code produced by devices that receive good copies of the content are shared among smartphones over short-range links [7].…”

“…Opportunistic communication based services have been proposed across several domains. For instance, studies have been done in the dissemination of dynamic content such as news using real world data sets, as well as that of traffic update information using dataset of the municipality of Bologna [19,25]. In several of the aforementioned application scenarios, the usefulness and/or relevance of the disseminated content crucially depends on it being opportunely delivered.…”

“…Whitbeck et al [25] were the first to study a fixed deadline scenario. They propose a Push-and-Track framework, where a subset of users receive the content from the infrastructure and start disseminating it epidemically.…”
