Introduction: Religious moderation is launched because it concerns the order of life of the nation and state, where the internet and social media become a platform for any dynamic public discussion and change perspectives and practices in religious harmony. This study examines access to information about religious moderation through the internet and social media (WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Line) as the most widely used platforms in Indonesia and the influence of exposure to its content on understanding and the system of relational interaction among university students.Methods: Explanatory quantitative survey method with factor and regression analysis to explain the dominant factors and the magnitude of the influence of exposure to religious moderation content on students' understanding and interpersonal relationships.Findings: That student quite often access information about religious moderation on social media through WhatsApp and Instagram. Issues related to national commitment, tolerance, intolerance, violence, radicalism, government attitudes, regulations and their consequences, correlate with the dogmatism factor. The findings show that it is not easy to change one's religious beliefs, and this should be respected. So what remains is to find common ground and give a positive impression so that social interactions continue to run normally.Originality: The research presents a novelty in the perspective of communication science on the understanding of religious moderation and its correlation with the interpersonal interaction system in students from non-religious campuses. Where previously religious moderation was widely studied in the perspective of language, civilization, humanity, culture, education and with subjects from religious campuses, especially Islam.

Shahbag Stolen? Third Force Dynamics and Electoral Politics in Bangladesh

The Shahbag Movement, demanding capital punishment for war criminals of the 1971 liberation war in Bangladesh, emerged in February 2013 in Dhaka. This youth-led grassroots movement erupted in response to infuriating establishment party politics as a populist third force, wanting closure to the painful memories of Bangladesh’s freedom struggle by seeking justice for the atrocities of 1971. However, perceived as siding with secular forces, Shahbag became instantly embroiled in adversarial party politics and appears to have been hijacked, as is argued here, by both major political parties of Bangladesh. Evaluating Shahbag as a case study for the framing tasks theory of social movements, the article supports its analysis through detailed empirical findings. Viewed historically, Shahbag may be treated as an initially powerful grassroots youth movement, akin to ‘Arab Spring’ phenomena, later stolen from the people of Bangladesh. However, a deeper analysis of Shahbag’s dynamics, accounting for the impact of the controversial national elections of January 2014, yields crucial insights about the continuing scope for a ‘third force’ in the forthcoming elections scheduled for December 2018.

Religious moderation was an important value in the life of modern society. The article aimed to anayze the practice and implications of religious moderation in Indonesian Islamic boarding schools based on theo-anthropocentric values. This research was qualitative field research with a phenomenological approach. The source of the research data was Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia and taken by representatives of the regions of East Java and Southeast Sulawesi as one of the largest Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. The research participants were 30 people including, the leaders of the pesantren, the caretakers of the pesantren, and the students of two major Islamic boarding schools in East Java. Data collection was done by interview technique. The data analyst follows a procedure that begins with data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. This result showed three main keys to the practice of religious moderation. First, the practice of moderation was in harmony between technology or theory and its application in the field. Second, the moderation attitude in the pesantren and its environment could prevent the emergence of radicalism. Third, this moderation practice also fosters and forms a tolerant and democratic attitude toward all the differences that exist. The results of this study could serve as a simple guide in applying of diversity moderation in other areas. The existence of limitations on the validity of the data and the depth of analysis was a note that needs to be completed in the future.
