“…This idea is expressed in previous studies (Doane and Elliott 2016;Han et al 2017;Leamaster and Hu 2014;Silverstein and Bengtson 2018). Moreover, our finding on depression is in line with evidence that some Chinese who are religious have worse mental health (Hou et al 2019;Hu, Yang, and Luo 2017;Wang et al 2015;Wei and Liu 2013;Zhang et al 2011). But we do not believe that being a cultural minority or experiencing state regulation (Hu, Yang, and Luo 2017;Zhang et al 2011) is the primary explanation.…”

“…Patterns for mental health are somewhat different. Research on Mainland China tends to report a negative association between mental health and religiosity, at least for certain subgroups (Hou et al 2019;Hu, Yang, and Luo 2017;Wang et al 2015;Wei and Liu 2013;Zhang et al 2011). Yet, research outside of Mainland China tends to report a positive or zero association between mental health and religiosity (Leurent, Nazareth, and Bellon-Saameno 2013;Gameroff, 2012, 2014;Roh, Hong, and Lee 2015;Shiah et al 2015;VanderWeele, Li, and Tsai 2016).…”

“…One of the important reasons is the large social environmental gap between rural and urban regions in China [ 25 ]. Among the urban elderly, age had a positive effect on the prevalence of suicidal ideation [ 26 ]. Among the rural elderly, religious belief had a positive effect on the prevalence of suicidal ideation, which has been identified in many previous studies in China [ 27 ].…”

“…Com relação a essa variável, observa-se que pesquisas foram excluídas do presente estudo em decorrência da idade ser superior a 25 anos (11,42,43) . Em algumas investigações os autores apenas mencionaram que os participantes tinham mais de 18 anos (44,45) , ou que eram adolescentes e jovens adultos (46) , e outros retratavam apenas a média de idade dos jovens (38,47) . Recomenda-se que os estudos especifiquem claramente a variação da idade dos participantes para permitir melhor compreensão dos resultados.…”
