Relocation of the 17 June 2017 Nuugaatsiaq (Greenland) Landslide Based on Green's Functions From Ambient Seismic Noises

Abstract: Landslide is one of the most dangerous geological hazards in mountainous regions, which causes large casualties. Fast and accurate location of a landslide is critical to disaster mitigation and early warning of secondary hazards. The landslide location is a difficult problem in a remote region with sparse seismic network due to low resolution of the velocity structure model. Green's functions from ambient seismic noises can be used to calibrate effects due to the uncertainty of velocity structure. In this stud… Show more

“…This method uses NCF between a remote station and a local station near the target earthquake to calibrate 3‐D path effects, which are the main source of error in the relocation (see Supporting Information S1). Depending on the quality of the NCF and the frequency used, the estimated centroid location can be accurate to within a few kilometers (Xie et al., 2020). We download 1‐year continuous waveform data from OBSs and other land stations in the western United States.…”

“…Seismic observations have shown promise in identifying landslides (Ekström, 2006; W. Fan et al., 2020; Manconi et al., 2016; Xie et al., 2020) and resolving landslide dynamics (Brodsky et al., 2003; Intrieri et al., 2018; Kanamori & Given, 1982; Lai et al., 2018; Poli, 2017). Fast‐moving landslides can generate seismic signals from short‐period (≥1 Hz; Doi & Maeda, 2020; Hibert et al., 2011; Yamada et al., 2012) to intermediate and long‐period motion (≤0.1 Hz; Allstadt, 2013; Kanamori & Given, 1982; Eissler & Kanamori, 1987).…”

“…The quality of seismic data is the basis of quantitative research in seismology. In recent years, a large amount of seismic ambient data obtained through dense networks has been used in high-precision tomography (Nakata et al 2015, Wang et al 2019 and landslide location (Xie et al 2020) and other fields. Specifically, the precision and synchronization of chronometers constitute indispensable prerequisites for these scientific investigations.…”
