Remanufacturing is one key element of a circular economy by closing the loop on the product level and thus maintaining or restoring the product design and the associated product properties. The remanufacturing process chain involves disassembly of used products, cleaning of parts, inspection and sorting of parts, reconditioning or replenishment by new parts, and product reassembly into as-new products. If new parts are required, additive manufacturing is a promising alternative to conventional manufacturing or the purchase of spare parts. Additive manufacturing is characterized by the layered or element-based construction of parts and does not require product-specific tools, enabling a cost-efficient production of individual pieces or small series. The use of specific design rules in product and process development to meet the requirements of the intended process enables and simplifies additive manufacturing or remanufacturing. Despite the design rules for additive manufacturing and remanufacturing, there are no design rules for implementing additive manufacturing technology in the remanufacturing process. In this paper, existing design rules on Design for Additive Manufacturing and Design for Remanufacturing will first be identified and compared, and possible synergies and conflicts of objectives will be analyzed. Based on this, a guideline for a Design for Additive Remanufacturing is developed to facilitate and promote the implementation of additive manufacturing in remanufacturing. The developed design rules enable the evaluation of a part aimed to be produced by additive manufacturing within the remanufacturing process and give advice on how to optimize the design of the part. This paper aims to derive general design rules for a “Design for Additive Remanufacturing” that specifically address the additive remanufacturing process.

Through the remanufacturing process, obsolete, broken, and end-of-use products are brought to “a like new condition”. Remanufacturing is an example of implementation of circular economy at a company level. There are few studies on responsible resource management in a remanufacturing process. This paper contributes to this research gap by presenting a two-layered framework, which uses the maturity model theory, and it allows for a quick scan of a remanufacturing process. First, in the descriptive layer of the framework we define five maturity levels with regard to responsible resource management. We analyze water, emissions, energy, and materials, and describe relevant responsible resource management practices, which we link with maturity levels. We also design the relevant self-assessment tool which utilizes the existing expert’s knowledge of a company. Then, in the prescriptive layer of the framework, we propose a method for the identification of the maturity gap, and areas for improvement. We develop a procedure for prioritizing the measures, which shall be implemented in order to achieve a higher level of responsible resource management in a remanufacturing company. The framework is tested in small and medium-sized enterprises from the automotive industry.

Background: Energy autonomy refers to the guaranteed energy availability by maximizing domestic potential. The success of the energy autonomy target requires dimensions of indicators for measurement, assessment, and evaluation. The purpose of the study is to determine the autonomy of Solar Power Plant management in Indonesia through indexing and to develop improvement strategies for management autonomy located in Jakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta. Methods: This research applied qualitative methods. The data from the informants were collected to obtain management autonomy measures that used scores and weights. A Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats matrix analysis establishes a strategy to increase autonomy. Results: The results showed that the value of the management autonomy index score was 2.79 ((from a maximum scale of 4.00), which was reasonable enough and equivalent to level three in the Capability Maturity Model. This level shows the capability to define the running process. It requires two steps of improvement or a strategy to achieve the optimal level, being able to perform process optimization for autonomy management (level 5). Based on the matrix analysis results, the appropriate approach is a strategy that improves weaknesses by maximizing opportunities in a quadrant III turn ground. Conclusios: The strategy was done by developing policies to enhance solar power plant stakeholder synergy in Indonesia and facilitate technology transfer to international solar power plant component producers. Autonomy in the management and control of solar power plants is essential so that there is no disruption on energy security in Indonesia. This study recommends evaluating or measuring the autonomy index for other energy sectors, especially to support the achievement of the energy mix target, which in turn aims to increase national energy autonomy and security.
