Remediation of DNAPL Pools Using Dense Brine Barrier Strategies

Abstract: Although dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) pools are an important source of groundwater contamination, little experimental data have been generated to develop a mature level of understanding of the problem, and few strategies specifically aimed at remediation have been advanced. We discuss the dominant importance of these features in subsurface systems, present novel two- and three-dimensional heterogeneous experimental systems, and show results from two evolving strategies for remediating DNAPL pools. The… Show more

“…Modeling of non-dilute systems in porous medium systems has received considerable attention in the literature both because of intrinsic interest [e.g., 9, 12, 13, 19–21] and also because of the many important applications that fall into this category of model [e.g., 10, 11, 17]. A rich, recent experimental literature has contributed as well to helping better understand the physicochemical phenomena of interest in these complex systems.…”

“…Laboratory experiments to investigate a range of BBRT’s have been performed in one-, two-, and three-dimensional porous medium systems, and heterogeneous systems have been the focus of these experiments (Hill et al, 2001; Johnson et al, 2004; Miller et al, 2000). Encouraging results have been reported based upon these experiments, including the efficient removal of high fractions of DNAPL from heterogeneous, three-dimensional systems (Hill et al, 2001; Johnson et al, 2004).…”

“…For example, Miller and workers have recently suggested a novel class of remediation methods based upon the injection of a dense brine, which is used to restrict the movement of dense non-aqueous phase liquids and aid remediation [1][2][3]. For such systems, the behavior of the brine as a function of space and time is a critical issue.…”
