Remediation of Manganese-Contaminated Coal-Mine Water Using Bio-Sorption and Bio-Oxidation by the Microalga Pediastrum duplex (AARLG060): A Laboratory-Scale Feasibility Study

Abstract: Acidification occurs as a result of acid mine drainage after the oxidative weathering of metal sulfides. The acidic condition corrodes other toxic elements from the soil and becomes distributed around the operating site. Although coal mines go through a process of rehabilitation, water samples in the rehabilitated reservoir still reveal high concentrations of certain metals, for example, manganese (Mn). Both living and non-living biomass substances were used in Mn remediation. However, using non-living biomass… Show more

“…In this experiment, P. duplex AARL G060 was cultivated in a medium containing of N, P, C, and Mg to measure its growth (Thongpitak et al, 2019) using OD 665 . The results show that P. duplex AARL G060 grow well in the control medium ( Figure 1A).…”

“…Water samples were collected in November and December 2017. Some physico-chemical parameters of the water sample were published elsewhere (Thongpitak et al, 2019). High-density polyethylene bottles of 20 L capacity were filled with natural wastewater and stored at 4 • C prior to use; water samples were used to generate BioMnO x using microalgae.…”

“…Living microalga, Pediastrum duplex AARLG060, was examined for its performance in biosorption and bio-oxidation of Mn from AMD (Thongpitak, Pekkoh, & Pumas, 2019). Living microalga enhanced Mn bio-oxidation and over 97% removal of Mn was obtained.…”
